My childhood church had a lovely custom. They would hand each child fake palm branches. As we entered the sanctuary we were instructed to fan them and shout Hosanna...Hosanna....Hosanna! (I think that was the only time we were allowed to shout in Church - lol).
It was a happy time...it meant Easter was only a week away. Generally there were flowers blooming and birds singing.
As an adult I still love this special time. Naturally the beginning of Holy Week symbolizes so much more than waving palm branches. It means having faith in the humble teacher who rode through the streets of Jerusalem on a donkey. He was the representation of hope, faith and love to anyone who followed Him. He still Is!
Thank you for stopping by and letting me share my memories and faith with you.
God bless!
What a beautiful remembrance Debbie! I hope you had a wonderful time at today's Palm Sunday service. Only now as an adult do we use palm fronds, I love it!
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful memories can be! Enjoy your Palm Sunday and thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteAmen to that Debbie. Hope you'll see some spring flowers soon.
ReplyDeleteI recall carrying little crosses made from strips of palm leaf when I was a child. I had forgotten till I read your post. :-)
ReplyDeleteI love your new page header, Debbie. Spring flowers in profusion!
Thank you for sharing your wonderful memories. Hope you will have a blessed Lenten season. May God bless you always.
ReplyDeleteI love your page header, it gives warm feelings.
Hi Debbie. Your painting is so gorgeous. Beautiful snowdrops poking their heads above the debris of winter and bringing in the new. Snowdrops are one of my favourite flowers to paint. At least I can enjoy them that way as I really am not a very good gardener. Funny how blogging seems to help us remember lots of past events. Thanks for sharing your memory with us. Anyway I hope you enjoy the Easter break. xx
ReplyDeleteA wonderful memory to share, thank you
ReplyDeleteThis week is daily prayer, Bible reading, and meditation.
A beautiful post to begin our reflections during Holy Week. I always enjoy hearing stories of services which include the children. Have a wonderful week. Bonnie
ReplyDeleteThank you for reminding me of how special and important this week is. How exciting it was to be a child at Easter sensing events were solemn, but anxious for the joyous celebration on Easter Sunday.
ReplyDeleteMemories relived through painting is so special
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely memory, Debbie! I remember getting palm branches once or twice in Sunday school too, though no shouting involved. LOL I love your watercolor of autumn leaves...my number one choice in screen names though it is usually taken.
ReplyDeleteThat painting is gorgeous! I love the simplicity of the composition and the soft, subtle coloring... it implies both the fragility of our world, and also the strength and perseverance of nature to carry on. Wonderful painting!
ReplyDeleteOh, and I used to get a palm branch in church on palm sunday too! I loved the song, "Hosannah". :)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful post, Debbie! Thanks for sharing your hope with us - and may all who read it, receive it!!
ReplyDeleteHappy Palm Sunday (a day late)! I love thinking back to Easter preparations as a child, and church was such a big part of it. I remember getting palms and coming back home with them and my father would weave us each a cross to wear. I also remember that on Palm Sunday we always wore our Easter bonnet from the year before. May you have a blessed week!
ReplyDeleteSadly I did not get to go to church often as a child and missed out on so much. In my adult years I now have wonderful Hosanna memories with my grands. :) Easter blessings.
