My Brother

Tuesday my brother will turn another year older.  It seems like our yesterdays suddenly became today.    Where does time go?

He is four years my junior.  Growing up that made me big sister and in charge.  I was responsible for keeping him safe and out of trouble.   Unfortunately at times that was  beyond my capabilities.  Certainly under my tutelage he learned many things.   Perhaps not all of them were beneficial.    




Life takes on more meaning when there is someone who wants to tag along to the berry patch...

take a hike...


or go sled riding.  
 

Shared memories are always the best and I am so glad I have a great brother to share mine.

A Discovery

In doing some fall chores I made a discovery. Hidden beneath a pile of books was this unused planner.  

It seemed like a shame to toss it.   The cover was in excellent condition.   Pages were clean and inviting.

Perhaps it might provide...








a new place to play...

to collect some painting ideas...













or harbor some small works of art.

Wonder what else might be hiding that needs discovered.   This may be a good reason to keep cleaning!   Have a beautiful day.

Favorite Hymn

 A favorite hymn of mine is "It is Well with My Soul".   The words were penned by a man who lost his four children at sea.   At the very spot where their ship wrecked, he wrote these following words.

Leaf Peeking and such!

Hubby and I decided to take a day to do some leaf peeking.









This year our autumn landscape has not been quite as vibrant.   Perhaps it is due to lack of frost.


 We managed though to find some lovely scenes that made us stop and take a peek.













There were some quaint places too that made the trip so pleasant.    This little shop served wonderful soup and the best coffee.    



 The shelves were decorated with art and antiques.












In the corner was a piano.   Wonder if anyone plays it.   Hope so.


To finish up our adventure we found an old cider mill in operation.  They sold apples,  pears, grapes and of course cider!
        
   It was certainly a wonderful trip - so glad you came along.

"Sit Still"

WIP
My mother used to say when I was much younger "will you please sit still."   That was never an easy thing for me to do.   It hasn't changed these many years later.  Perhaps that is why hummingbirds fascinate me so...   always on the move and rarely still.  

This past summer they left much earlier than the previous one.   There wasn't even  an opportunity to say good bye.   Obviously they were in a hurry to get to their winter home.

The feeders are still hanging in the pussy willow bush.  They look  forlorn.   Time to take them down.   How quickly the seasons pass.   It seems like just yesterday they arrived for their summer visit.  Where does time go?

In a few weeks Thanksgiving will be here and before one knows it snow.   The hummers will be somewhere warm making their travel plans for spring.  I'll be waiting but for sure not "sitting still."!

Fall Things

There are many fall things I enjoy doing.

Making vegetable soup is one.  There is something cozy about gathering the ingredients and spending a bit of time in the kitchen.

Left over roast beef makes a great foundation with its rich broth for this hearty dish.  Sliced carrots and celery - shredded cabbage - diced onion -  green beans and corn with several cups of tomato juice is all that is needed.   If one likes - a potato or two can be added.   Then everything goes into the slow cooker which is set on low.   Some salt and pepper to taste - a bit of sugar, oregano and basil will give it a good flavor.  The last ingredient is a bay leaf on top.  (Important to remove the leaf before serving).  It is best to let the soup cook for several hours or overnight.  
Not only does this dish taste delicious.   It will warm the heart and feed the soul.
